New school debate
Plans to spend more than $118 million on three new schools in New Westminster are livening up that city’s Nov.15 election campaign.
An estimated 200 people showed up at a series of public meetings on the weekend to hear about how the district is coping with the discovery of a century-old cemetery on the site, where a new high school and middle schools were originally planned.
Last week, the board unveiled plans to move ahead with the $85 million high school, but relocate the middle school onto one of three different parks – Grimston Park in the residential West End of the city, Riverside Adventure Park, a smaller parcel of land sandwiched between the busy commuter routes of Sixth Avenue and Stewardson Way, and Simcoe Park, near the city's 8th Street SkyTrain Station.
Longtime school trustee Michael Ewen, said a decision is needed quickly because once the new high school is built, there will be no classroom space for the estimated 200 grade eight students who are supposed to move into the new middle school.
Ewen said another possible site for the middle school is adjacent to the proposed new Moody Park outdoor swimming pool, but he noted city council has not been in favour of that plan.
