Coquitlam mayoral candidate Richard Stewart is near horizontal after an old back injury flared up on election day.

Stewart spent most of today pressing the flesh in hopes of upending incumbent Maxine Wilson in what's expected to be a one of the closest municipal races in the Lower Mainland.

"We heard a lot of support in the community but it's tough to know if that support will translate over to the ballot box," he said.
Stewart campaigned on tightening city spending after projects, such as a public swimming pool, ran long on time and millions of dollars over budget.

"We need to be a better client when it comes to construction," he said.

Inside Stewart's election headquarters a handful of his 120 supporters are preparing refreshments for what they hope to be a festive night.

Sounds of a beer bottle, or two, twisting open, could be heard over the TV showing tonight's Oilers-Avalanche game.
