Richmond: Brodie reflects on his win
Richmond mayor Malcolm Brodie says he can’t wait to lead the city into the Olympics after being re-elected.
“It’s a good feeling when you have won a convincing victory like this,” Brodie told 24 hours. “It feels great [to be involved during the Olympics]. It’s something we’ve been really working towards over the last few years.”
Brodie gathered 19,694 votes, eclipsing Ivan Gerlach’s 5,207.
Mayor since 2001, Brodie has been a target for critics of the city’s two mega-projects – the Olympic Oval and the Canada Line – so he can’t wait to see both completed within the next year.
“Of course, on December 12 we have the opening of the Oval and we’re working on getting the Canada Line finished,” he said. “So I’m looking forward to 2010 and we have to start getting ready for the post-Olympic phase, too.”
Brodie isn’t sure how the current global economic situation will affect Richmond’s growth, but he expects the city to do well.
