West Van: Goldsmith-Jones back as mayor
Pamela Goldsmith-Jones won a second term as West Vancouver mayor, despite challenges from two municipal councillors.
Her 4,185 votes were less than the combined total of losers Vivian Vaughan (3,552) and John E. Clark (2,357). Newcomer Max Clough had just 46.
Goldsmith-Jones' platform stressed housing diversity, transportation planning and long-term budget planning.
"West Vancouver's got lots on its mind to do with the budget," she said at a victory party in her Ambleside campaign office. "So we're going to pull together and address that. And we have a fabulous new council."
Goldsmith-Jones was able to overcome the controversial 2006 firing of West Vancouver Police chief Scott Armstrong, which was connected to revelations that officers held drinking parties at the police station.
Bill Soprovich and Michael Smith were the only incumbents returned to council. Newcomers Michael Lewis, Michael Evison, Trish Panz and Nora Gambioli were elected.
The North Shore's other mayors were acclaimed. Both Darrell Mussatto in North Vancouver City and Richard Walton in North Vancouver District are entering their second term.
Incumbent city councilors Pam Bookham, Bob Fearnley and Craig Keating were returned. Rod Clark made a successful comeback. Guy Heywood and Mary Trentadue were also elected.
School board chair Chris Dorais lost his bid for re-election. 24 hours revealed last month that Dorais will go on trial next year on impaired driving charges.
District council incumbents Robin Hicks, Lisa Muri, Mike Little, Doug MacKay-Dunn and Alan Nixon are joined by newcomer Roger Bassam.
