The final results at Delta municipal hall brought shouts, cheers and a few tears.

Incumbent Lois Jackson will return as mayor for her fourth term, after garnering 52 per cent of the votes. She quickly called her daughter to tell her the good news and then was surrounded by supporters offering their congratulations.

Jackson said that she’s looking forward to another three years, and that council has a lot of catching up to do after being in campaign mode for the last month. “I’m probably going to sleep in Monday!” she joked, but added, “No, we’re back on the saddle now…it’s right back to work.”

Krista Engelland, who trailed with 39 per cent, said that she’ll also be heading back to work Monday, but this time it will be in her family’s business of fiberglass manufacturing. “As my husband said, my job’s still available at 8 o’clock Monday morning,” she said.

Engelland said that she’s happy with the positive response she received from the community during campaigning, but was disappointed that there were five contenders for mayor, who she said split the vote in Jackson’s favour.

George Hawksworth, who will be returning to council, said that the two new faces in Heather King and Anne Peterson will “liven things up.”

King, who will make the move from Delta’s school board to council, was brought to tears by the results. She said that her strong belief in campaigning door-to-door contributed to her win, and couldn’t have done it without her mother, who averaged 250 houses a day. “We got a lot of sympathy votes going out in the rain!” she joked.

The public opinion question on whether Delta Hospital should receive $500,000 for a CT Scanner won by a landslide.
