Burnaby Snapshot
From simmering allegations of financial mismanagement to claims of heavy-handed discipline in the city’s main opposition party, things could get nasty in the upcoming Burnaby civic election campaign.
But Mayor Derek Corrigan, who represents the NDP-affiliated Burnaby Citizens Association, said he’d like the campaign to focus on the positive issues such as the dedication of green space and the ongoing development of the Edmonds town centre.
Andrew Chisholm, the Team Burnaby challenger for mayor, said his group wants to change the culture of politics at city hall by working with other levels of government, eliminating red tape and improving public safety.
In the background is a potentially litigious debate over the city’s handling of multi-million dollar computer contract – an issue that led to the creation of a new civic party, the Independent Voices, which will field a partial slate of three city council candidates in the Nov. 15 vote.
