Delta Mayor set to go it alone
For the first time in more than 20 years, Lois Jackson will be running as an independent after splitting from her former political party, TriDelta. She will be facing off against a familiar face in Krista Engelland, a current councillor who was also part of the TriDelta team. The mayor’s former party has endorsed Engelland along with three other hopefuls.
Jackson, who split from TriDelta in September, has teamed up with councillors Robert Campbell and Scott Hamilton under the banner of the Delta Independent Voters Association. Although it is an official electoral organization, Jackson is quick to point out that it is a “loose coalition of like-minded people” who will be campaigning together as independents.
Incumbent George Hawksworth will also run as an independent, campaigning with former councillor Bruce McDonald and school trustee hopeful Laura Dixon. Dixon is one of seven running for the school board, although there are only seven spots open. Gordon Masi, Dale Saip and Simon Truelove will be returning under the Responsible Education and Academic Leadership Society slate along with newcomer Brenda Schneider.
Voters are also being asked if they are in favour of granting one-time funding to Delta Hospital for a CT Scanner to the tune of $500,000.
