Langley City Snapshot
Densification, and the crime that comes with urban life, will be on the mind of voters in the city of Langley when they head for the polls on Nov. 15.
But the bigger news in the city of 25,000 is that incumbent mayor Peter Fassbender actually has a challenger.
Leading up to the Oct. 10 nomination deadline, it appeared that Fassbender – elected three years ago – wouldn’t have an opponent for the mayor’s seat until former council candidate Ron Abgrall announced his intention to run.
The two-way race should provide some drama in a city determined to grow its downtown core and integrate more with the Lower Mainland.
But the truth is most of the attention during the municipal election will be focused on the seven candidates vying for the city’s two school trustee positions.
Education has been a hot issue in the city since H. D. Stafford secondary school – the only high school in the city – was converted into a middle school in September.
