Port Moody Snapshot
Port Moody residents will finally have a choice when voting for their city’s next leader.
Mayor Joe Trasolini, who won re-election by acclamation in 2005, is being challenged by 46-year-old resident Shane Kennedy.
Kennedy said he was motivated to run by the recent debate over a Plasco Energy proposal to build a waste-to-energy facility in the city.
Depending on a decision by the current council on Oct. 28, Kennedy believes Plasco is one of the key issues in the election.
“I am really concerned about the quality of our air,” he said. “I do not want to wake up one day and find one of my children is sick and I did nothing about it.”
Kennedy says that since Port Moody cannot generate enough trash for the incinerator, the city would become a net importer of garbage.
Beyond terminating the proposed Plasco development, Kennedy said if elected he would slow the rate of development in Port Moody and preserve Rocky Point Park by prohibiting expansion in the area.
According to Trasolini, the No. 1 issue for residents in Port Moody is transportation infrastructure.
