More police for Burnaby?
The man who wants to be Burnaby’s new mayor is calling on city hall to hire 100 more RCMP officers over three years in an effort to fight back against an apparent crime wave that has seen his business park hit by thieves 10 times in the past six weeks.
But sitting mayor Derek Corrigan said the proposal from Andrew Chisholm and centre-right Team Burnaby is nothing but politics that would likely result in a tax hike of up to eight per cent.
“I don’t know where he’s going to get the money,” said Corrigan, noting that the city recently hired 25 new police officers, and council has approved plans to add 25 more officers over the next three years, in accordance with a request from the superintendent in charge of the detachment.
Chisholm said the extra officers would be paid for by ‘better management” of the city’s budget, and by using the city’s growing casino revenue fund, which was previously set aside for environment and social planning projects.
Garth Evans, one of two Independent Voice members on council, agreed with the plan to hire the extra officers, and said it may also be necessary to add space to the Burnaby RCMP detachment offices.
